Thermal imaging chips are applied in various fields, including autonomous vehicles, fire prevention, and especially military science and national defense. However, this is considered a highly challenging and complex industry with a high failure rate, requiring enormous investment and access to advanced equipment. These were the difficulties faced by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tran Thuat from the University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, and his team in the early stages of their research and development of thermal imaging chips.
Thanks to funding from the Vingroup Innovation Foundation (VinIF) since 2019, the project has achieved significant milestones, opening new frontiers in thermal imaging chip technology and marking a proud achievement for Vietnam by pioneering and mastering core technologies — something only a few countries in the world have accomplished.
In the VTV1 documentary “The Light of Knowledge”, Prof. Vu Ha Van, Chief Science Officer of VinIF, praised this project as one of the Foundation’s successful funding initiatives. It has spun off into a startup, raised capital, and commercialized its products. This success demonstrates Vietnam’s ability to independently develop critical technologies in national defense. VinIF continues to fund similar projects in areas where Vietnam has strengths, fostering the creation of exceptional products.
The Vingroup Innovation Foundation (VinIF) is part of the VinBigdata ecosystem, aiming to transform the mindset and culture of scientific research in Vietnam while supporting the growth of the local scientific community. Over the past seven years, with total funding exceeding VND 900 billion, VinIF has become an incubator for impactful projects and young talents, reaffirming VinBigdata’s commitment to the sustainable development of science in Vietnam.
